   En la ciudad de Génova, rodeada por el mar Adriático y con un buen puerto de mar, nació esta joven en el año 1809. Por su mente, abierta como el mar que contemplaban sus ojos, ideó, ya desde su juventud, la fundación de comunidades entregadas completamente a la educación de las chicas pobres.

   No tuvo mucha suerte al principio. El mismo padre le aconsejó que dejara sus fundaciones para volver a casa, ya que las hermanas se le iban o enfermaban.   Pero como era cosa de Dios, siguió adelante. La congregación nueva lleva por nombre “Hijas de la Santa Fe”. Más tarde se cambió este nombre por el de “Hermanas de Santa Dorotea”.

   Aunque tenía un aspecto débil y delicado, su voluntad era un volcán que despedía de sí una constancia inquebrantable. En 1842 llegó su fundación a la propia Roma. Y en el mismo centro, en Santa María la Mayor, puso su primera escuela. Y poco a poco fue fundando nuevas escuelas en parroquias y en sitios en los que hubiera más necesidad educativa.

   Los Papas Gregorio XVI y Pío IX le fueron confiando sitios o puestos de mayor responsabilidad. Ella los aceptaba como venidos de la mano de Dios. Cuando su obra se iba extendiendo muy aprisa, los franceses invadieron Roma. El Papa tuvo que salir para Gaeta.

   Los soldados encontraron en ella y en sus hermanas una cálida acogida, ayuda, hospitalidad. Les tomaron tal afecto que, incluso cuando las veían por las calles, le hacían el saludo militar.

   En 865 salió la primera expedición de misioneras para Brasil, Portugal y otros países. Murió el 11 de junio de 1882. Juan Pablo II la proclamó santa en 1984.
  

Paula Frassinetti es hija de Dios desde el día de su nacimiento, el 3 de marzo de 1809, recibiendo el Bautismo este mismo día en la Parroquia de San Esteban de Génova, su ciudad natal.

Nace después de José y Francisco. Paula crece serena en la casa paterna, que se verá alegrada después con el nacimiento de Juan y Rafael. Su madre es el ejemplo más vivo de virtud y la pequeña se abre delicadamente a la gracia divina que obra en ella maravillas. Según el plan de Dios, Angela, su buena madre no tendrá tiempo de ver los proyectos de Dios sobre su hija. Morirá dejando a Paula, todavía en la edad del juego, al cuidado de la casa. Son días de desorientación y dolor. Paula tiene 9 años.

No se ahorra fatigas y tiene con su padre, Juan Bautista, y con sus hermanos atenciones amorosas y delicadas, que le exigen no pocas renuncias y sacrificios.

Su Primera Comunión y el sacerdocio de su hermano José son momentos de profunda reflexión para ella, que ya siente en su corazón la llamada divina.

En la familia aprende a leer y a escribir y recibe la base de su formación. Su hermano José, avanzado ya en los estudios de Teología, le habla de las cosas de Dios y Paula escucha y acoge la palabra de Dios que penetra en su corazón. Percibe la llamada para seguir más de cerca al Señor y en ella resuenan profundamente las palabras del Maestro: «Quién ama a su padre y a su madre más que a mí, no es digno de mí».

Pero... hay un pero. Su padre no está de acuerdo: ¿Qué hará sin su Paulina? Y Paula se ve obligada a acallar ese deseo, esperando la hora de Dios. Y llega la ocasión.

A los 19 años experimenta un momento de cansancio dado el ritmo de vida agobiante al tener que desempeñar el papel de madre en la familia.

Su hermano Don José, ya Párroco de un pueblecito de la costa ligur la hospeda durante algún tiempo. El aire puro de Quinto es un buen remedio para su salud delicada. La vida en la parroquia es para ella un campo de aprendizaje de obras de bien, y poco a poco, con su cordial afabilidad atraerá a las jóvenes de aquel lugar. Todos los domingos van al campo a hablar de Dios. Los encuentros se repiten con frecuencia y el diálogo se extiende a otras jovencitas. Paula les revela el secreto de una vida dedicada totalmente al Señor y descubre sus aptitudes y su vocación de educadora. En torno a ella se forma un grupo comprometido que vive en comunión de amor. En su mente se clarifica la idea de un nuevo Instituto: así se lo confía a su hermano D. José.

Pronto, a pesar de los obstáculos y sufrimientos, el ideal será realidad. Son seis las compañeras que superan los primeros momentos, tan difíciles. Paula está decidida. En el signo de la cruz está el comienzo de su obra, aquella cruz que ella amará durante toda su vida y que le hará exclamar: «Quien más se sacrifica, más ama».

Así, el 12 de agosto de 1834, en el Santuario de San Martino in Albaro, siete jóvenes ofrecen su vida a Dios. La Misa la celebra su hermano D. José que las había preparado para ese paso tan importante. Son felices; pocas horas después, pondrían la primera piedra de su Instituto; comenzarían a vivir en comunidad, apoyándose en la única riqueza: Jesucristo. En realidad, no tienen nada, son pobres en la casita de Quinto que han elegido como primera morada.

Abren una Escuela para las niñas más pobres y así tienen que trabajar aún de noche, para sobrevivir. No falta el entusiasmo, y de ahí los primeros éxitos de la Escuela. Pero los caminos del Señor no son nuestros caminos: los sufrimientos representan para Paula la prueba de la Voluntad de Dios. El cólera infecta Génova y sus hijas están en primera fila para llevar ayuda y consuelo.

En 1835, un sacerdote de la región de Bérgamo, D. Lucas Passi, amigo de D. José, conociendo el celo apostólico de Paula, le propone acoger en su Instituto la Pía Obra de Santa Dorotea, fundada por él con el fin de acercarse a los jóvenes más pobres y necesitados en su ambiente de vida y trabajo. Paula percibe en la originalidad de esa obra su linea educativa y la dimensión apostólica de su consagración y por eso no duda en integrarla en las actividades de su Instituto. Sus hijas no se llamaran ya «Hijas de la Santa Fe» sino Hermanas de Santa Dorotea.

Es un momento importante para la vida de aquella comunidad que ve concretarse su inspiración original: «estar planamente disponibles en las manos de Dios para evangelizar a través de la educación, dando preferencia a los jóvenes y a los más pobres».

Surgen nuevas casas en Génova y después en el centro de la cristianidad. Apenas siete años después de la fundación, el 19 de mayo de 1841, Paula se encuentra en Roma, acompañada de dos novicias. También aquí surgen nuevas dificultades: la primera casa tiene dos pequeñas habitaciones situadas sobre un establo en el callejon de los Santos Apóstoles. Paula acepta todo, le espera una gran recompensa: será recibida por el Papa Gregogio XVI que se complace en la labor de sus Doroteas. Es feliz: le ha hablado el Señor.

Las incomodidades y los sufrimientos aumentan: pobreza y enfermedades afligen a aquellas heróicas hermanas que no tienen una moneda para sus necesidades.

En 1844 el Papa confía a Paula la dirección del Conservatorio de Santa María del Refugio, en San Onofrio. La madre con dulzura y caridad da al ambiente un nuevo aspecto y una orientación decisiva para el futuro de la Institución. Por su presencia en ella, la casa de San Onofrio será la sede generalicia.

El 1846, un espíritu antirreligioso, más que un pensamiento político invade Italia. En Génova son perseguidas también las Doroteas. Las hijas de Paula viven momentos de fuerte persecución. La tempestad llega también a Roma: Pío IX, sucesor de Gregorio XVI, se ve obligado a refugiarse en Gaeta. Cardenales, Obispos y Prelados se alejan de la capital. Paula permanece sóla al frente de una comunidad numerosa y con fe intrépida supera aquellos momentos dramáticos.

La borrasca se calma. Es el año 1850. Paula obtiene la tan deseada audiencia con Pío IX, que para ella es como un padre. Va a Gaeta empujada por el gran amor al Papa y a la Iglesia, recordando así el gesto de Santa Catalina de Siena.

Comienza la última etapa de la vida de la Fundadora, que podemos definir como el periodo de la gran expansión, puesto que el Instituto, además de consolidarse en Liguria y en los Estados Pontificios, extiende su obra al resto de Italia y del mundo. De hecho surgen en Roma varios Centros educativos y Paula inicia los trámites para abrir una casa en Nápoles, un internado en Bolonia y un orfanato en Recanati.

En 1866 marchan las primeras hermanas misioneras a Brasil. En el mismo año otra meta prometedora: Portugal.

Paula anima a sus hijas:  «El Señor os llene de su Espíritu y os convierta en otras tantas llamas ardientes que donde tocan encienden el fuego del amor de Dios», les dice.

Las dificultades no cesan en el camino de los santos. Paula es una mujer de gran fe  «El Señor nos quiere apoyadas sólo en El y si tuviéramos un poco más de fe, cuanto más tranquilas estaríamos en medio de las tribulaciones».

Vive el abandono completo a la Voluntad de Dios «única perla que debemos buscar» - dice ella - y que constituye su paraiso: «Voluntad de Dios, eres mi paraiso».

En 1878 muere Pío IX, el Papa que en sus numerosos encuentros con la Fundadora, tuvo siempre palabras de estima y de aliento para su obra apostólica.

Paula siente que su ajetreada vida terrena va a acabar. Son las primeras horas del día 11 de junio de 1882. Está serena.

Su muerte es dulce, tranquila y deja entrever los tesoros de su vida. Invoca a la Santísima Virgen a quien tanto ha amado siempre:  «Señora mia, recuerda que soy tu hija».

8 de Junio de 1930, Paula es Beatificada!

11 de Marzo de 1984: las campanas de San Pedro repiten su toque festivo para anunciar que Paula es Santa.

El himno de fiesta llega a los confines del mundo donde las Doroteas trabajan por la gloria de Dios y la expansión de su Reino:

Europa: España, Inglaterra, Italia, Malta, Portugal y Suiza.América del Norte: Estados Unidos.

América latina: Brasil y Perú.
Africa: Angola y Mozambique.Asia: Taiwan.

Y Paula  «permanece viva en la Congregación a través del  espíritu profundo que la anima: buscar siempre y en todo  la mayor gloria de Dios en el mayor servicio a los hombres».

La familia
Pablo José María Frassinetti nació en Génova en el distrito de la Parroquia N. S. de las Viñas el 15 de diciembre de 1804 y murió el 2 de enero de 1868.

Fue el primero de diez hijos: sobrevivieron solo cinco. Cuatro de ellos llegaron a ser sacerdotes; la única hija, la fuerte y dulce Paola, fue fundadora de la Congregación religiosa de las Hermanas de Santa Dorotea: Pío XI, en 1930, la elevó a los honores de los altares y Juan Pablo II, en 1986, la canonizó.

La base familiar no podía ser más rica y espléndida de vida cristiana, alimentada por la fuerte fe del padre, Juan Bautista y de la muy dulce piedad de la madre, Angela Viale, que guiaba a sus hijos uno por uno, a medida que iban llegando, al santuario de la "Madonnetta" (la Virgencita), para consagrar el corazón a María.

De sus sesenta y cuatro años de vida, cuarenta y uno los empleó en el ministerio sacerdotal, y la modesta y pobre parroquia de Santa Sabina en Génova llegó a ser por treinta años el centro polarizador e irradiador.

Antes había ejercido el ministerio por breve tiempo en San Esteban, en Génova, después, desde 1831 a 1839, como Párroco en Quinto. Aquí había conducido consigo a la hermana Paola y es aquí que ella, con la ayuda y bajo la guía de su hermano, dio inicio al Instituto de Santa Dorotea.

La personalidad
Fue muy simple y común, podemos decir sin ruidos, pero intensa y luminosa como su caridad, cuyo ejercicio se realizaba en forma tan silenciosa como heroica, no solo por la naturaleza que lo hacía despojarse de todo para sus pobres sino también por la total generosidad con la cual estaba dispuesto a donar hasta su vida. De esto dio prueba en situaciones dramáticas durante el cólera del 1835-37 y también en 1856.

Sus escritos contienen muy pocas referencias autobiográficas que sirven para reconstruir un personaje desde el interior: sin embargo justamente de sus escritos se pueden recoger desde el punto de vista doctrinal, humano y espiritual, las líneas más profundas de su rica y fuerte personalidad.

Ciertamente, la simplicidad y la amabilidad con que son redactados sus escritos forman en el lector una impresión de reserva y casi distancia, la misma que se prueba al primer encuentro con su imagen de ojos profundos en un rostro pálido como de asceta.

Tuvo por naturaleza un carácter muy fuerte - así decía de él la hermana Paola - y aquel fuego que le quemaba adentro quedó por toda su vida, pero con otro objetivo: un arder con amor de Dios.

El Pueblo se dio cuenta en seguida que en aquel cuerpo, hecho seco y demacrado por la penitencia, vivía un alma ardiente y dominadora. Era un acercarse a él "a todas las horas" de gente de todo estado, toda condición, cultura, religión, tanto que la iglesia de Santa Sabina no alcanzaba a contenerla toda.

La época histórica
Se encontró viviendo en un siglo que por varios aspectos fue de gran altura y por eso mismo de grandes problemas, por la tumultuosa decantación de todo aquello que un mundo en ferviente crecida hacía refluír como heredad de tiempos pasados y como levadura de nuevos. Dice el Cardenal Siri: "Frassinetti fue todo, solo y , por sus tiempos, tenazmente sacerdote. Él era un pastor un pastor de almas y entonces estimó su sagrado deber ocuparse solamente de aquellos aspectos doctrinales y prácticos que los movimientos, llamados liberales, determinaban en orden a la vida espiritual y moral del laicado y del clero.

Supo discernir con claridad de visiones las cuestiones meramente temporales y políticas de los superiores intereses religiosos y no permitió que estos fueran jamás subordinados a razones políticas.

Por este motivo, y solamente por este, atacó y lo hizo hasta el final - a hombres políticos como Gioberti, contra el cual escribió el célebre "Ensayo entorno a la dialéctica y a la razón de Vicente Gioberti" (1846) que le desencadenó en contra las iras del más equivocado cura del siglo pasado, y de todos aquellos que compartían el mismo pensamiento. Nació una polémica muy violenta en la cual participó con nobleza de altura pero pronto padeció las consecuencias: ya mirado de reojo por los seguidores y especialmente los familiares de Mazzini, por su lucha abierta, contra el jansenismo, fue envuelto en la indigna y violenta persecución que se desató en Génova con furor, primero contra los Jesuitas y las Congregaciones religiosas, que fueron disueltas, y después contra los simpatizantes de los Jesuitas, de Sturla y de Frassinetti: así el 18 de marzo de 1948 fue obligado a tomar el camino del exilio por un año.

Fecundidad del exilio
Dios que escribe derecho con líneas torcidas permitió que este tiempo resultara de gran ventaja para él y para los suyos. De hecho su espiritualidad, toda dirigida siempre a nuevos encuentros con el Señor, tuvo la posibilidad de concentrarse en íntima oración de tal forma que le hará definir aquel período como "el más feliz" de su vida.

Además la austeridad que ordenó su vida, ya caracterizada por un estilo de franciscana pobreza desde chico, le regaló una más exquisita sensibilidad en el gusto y en el amor por la cruz, que le permitirán entrar a fondo en el espíritu de las mejores páginas de San Juan de la Cruz. También fue en aquel tiempo de exilio en el cual el "se enamoró" de las obras de Santa Teresa de Ávila.

El descubrimiento de Santa Teresa tuvo una grandísima importancia en la vida y en las obras del Siervo de Dios. De la meditación de aquellas páginas el sacó alimento para sus discreciones, su medida y ponderada prudencia que constituyen el admirado fondo psicológico de todos sus escritos y en particular de su "teología moral".

Acción pastoral
Su acción se colocó en un plano totalmente religioso y eclesial. El primer problema fue la formación espiritual y cultural del clero y en modo particular del clero joven, por el cual tenía mucha inquietud de apostolado desde el alba de su sacerdocio. En verdad esta era una prioridad para la vida de la Iglesia y de Génova en especial.

Pastoral vocacional
Frassinetti desarrolló dos planes de trabajo: el primero dirigido a la acción a largo plazo para fortalecer las filas del clero; el segundo a una acción intensa y penetrante para la santificación y actualización cultural del mismo clero.

El siervo de Dios procuró facilitar la actuación y la difusión de estas ideas, casi en la totalidad ideas nuevas para su tiempo. Lo hizo fundando asociaciones y pías uniones de las cuales pudieran nacer vocaciones sacerdotales y religiosas.

Entre estas instituciones hay que señalar en primer término la "Pía Unión de los Hijos de Santa María Inmaculada" fundada por él en Santa Sabina el 14 de noviembre de 1860 con tan sólo cuatro jóvenes. Ella se proponía formar laicos que, encarnando con mucho coraje el ideal evangélico de la castidad perpetua, de la práctica de la pobreza y de la obediencia, tendieran a conseguir la perfección cristiana y se rindieran disponibles operadores del evangelio para llevar almas a Dios con el ejercicio de la caridad.

Enseguida creció fuerte por número de asociados y por intensidad de vida espiritual, tanto que el Prior la transformó en "Obra de los Hijos de S. María Inmaculada".

De esta, como de otras instituciones suyas el Prior tuvo solamente la alegría del sembrador, no la alegría plena de aquel que cantando cosecha las mieses. Pero aquella Obra, bajo la dirección firme del P. Antonio Piccardo, donó centenares de sacerdotes a la Iglesia (420 sacerdotes de los cuales 20 misioneros en América, India y China; 51 Religiosos, 4 Obispos).

El Papa San Pío X, en 1904, por "motu propio" erigió esta Obra en Congregación religiosa de derecho pontificio.

Formación del Clero
La santificación y la actualización cultural del clero fue el otro objeto de su vida. Desplegó una actividad con tanto amor hacia sus hermanos en el sacerdocio y con tal intuición de las exigencias de los tiempos nuevos, que solo bastaría para coronar toda su vida santa.

Servicio parroquial
Todo este fervor de trabajo no quitaba para nada el compromiso pastoral que el tenía como párroco para su rebaño. El primer don que el hacía a ellas era la constante luminosidad de su ejemplo, como modelo perfecto de todas las virtudes humanas y sacerdotales.

El brillaba de tal forma en las virtudes que resulta difícil decir cual era su característica: entre su inmaculada pureza, su ardor eucarístico, su humildad y pobreza, el incontrolable apego a la fe y al Papa que lo hacía dispuesto a sellar con su sangre su amor declarado, su ternura confiada a la devoción filial de María, aquel equilibrio perfecto que supo realizar en sí mismo capaz de asignar siempre su verdadero lugar en su pensamiento y en su actividad a las características de la naturaleza y de la gracia, a las pasiones, a las virtudes, a la imaginación y a la inteligencia, al corazón y a la voluntad, a las criaturas virtudes, a la imaginación y a la inteligencia, al corazón y a la voluntad, a las criaturas y a Dios por el cual resulta un conjunto armonioso que para el alma es paz y fuerza y para quien observa desde afuera es espectáculo de unidad y de belleza.

Apóstol para todos
Con todas sus fuerzas se puso a trabajar. Habló con gran simpleza al hombre del siglo XIX del plan de salvación concebido por el Padre y realizado por Jesucristo. A todos habló de la estupenda realidad de su vocación sobrenatural de Hijo de Dios, del infinito amor del Padre en Cristo Jesús, en quien todos hubiesen podido encontrar su autenticidad como hijos del Padre celestial, con la posibilidad de elevarla hacia la perfección de la caridad.

Esta es la esencialidad de los contenidos de su acción ascética que llevó a las almas no con el ímpetu de un gran río, sino con muchos pequeños y grandes arroyos que corrieron por todos lados frescos y límpidos. Realmente este apóstol, mediante sus escritos, llevo el ideal de la auténtica vida cristiana a cada espíritu y dentro de "cada casa".

Su "Consuelo del alma devota" fue como un abrirse de par en par de las puertas de la santidad, cerradas por el Jansenismo a todas las almas. "La monja en casa" y "El Religioso al siglo" fueron estimulantes propuestas de metas fuertes de vida interior y de apostolado laico. "El Padre nuestro de Santa Teresa" y "El Paraíso en tierra". "El banquete del amor divino", con toda la variedad de múltiples folletos, libritos (algunos de ellos traducidos en varios idiomas con gran número de copias), indicaron a los hombres del árido siglo racionalista y materialista los caminos en los cuales se encontraba Dios vivo y verdadero para gozar de la inefable intimidad.

La última tarea
Hacia el final de 1867 llevó a la imprenta el último escrito, su testamento de amor y de fe "El banquete del Divino Amor". Después lo atacó una pulmonía fulminante. El primero de año de 1868 recibió la Eucaristía como viático.

El dos de enero, mientras agonizaba "buscó con la mano ya fría la medalla de la Virgen que tenía colgada al cuello por medio de una soguita, la besó con mucha devoción, escribió Fassiolo, que estaba allí presente. Poco antes de las tres de la tarde, José Frassinetti se durmió serenamente en el Señor".

The oldest church in Buenos Aires: Iglesia del Pilar



The oldest church of Buenos Aires is in the heart of upscale super chick
Recoleta neighborhood. This simple and small colonial construction featuring
clean rounded lines, all painted in white; with no apparent extravaganza is
THE traditional church of the city, the place of prayer and comfort for the
Argentine society group.



We recently told the history of the Recoletos religious order related to the
history of the Recoleta cemetery, the story of burials in this area begins
much earlier than the 19th century. Fascinating and interesting this story
is not commonly told due to the discrepancies throughout time in the way
people deal with death and the aftermath.

It should be put in time development perspective in order to bring into the
present the stories of life and death, power and connections.



At the beginning of the eighteenth century the Recoletos settled in the
area. It was in 1732 when Italian origin Architect, Giovanni Andrea Bianchi
conceived the Church very much alike the one we have today. However, with
the pass of time and the development of the nation and its elites, the main
society church began to suffer aesthetic alterations in an attempt to rise
the construction accordingly to the social standard it represented.

The mixture of styles and constant additions were ruining the original
concept; in 1939-1940 Andr? Mill? a prominent architect, was the man in
charge of restoring the church into its original features, conserving the
Pas-de-Calais tiles decorating the tower and the spherical clock on its
back. Today the visitor and the religious can admire its gorgeous inside
featuring in the main altar and the six lateral chapels the influx of the
late Baroque style. In spite of the strong European style echoes -religious,
architectonic and decorative- we can see rising from the silent details a
great deal of indigenous style marks such as the interesting Inca like sun
atop the front section of the altar -made in carefully handcrafted American
silver-, or the typically Inca style in the angel faces -featuring full red
cheeks- all this is a strong prove of the syncretism in the art input to the
temple's construction.



Along with the European styles, religions, ideas and ways of life came a
specific relationship with the dead and the aftermath. While the local
civilizations prior to the conquest had a circular world conception in which
the living and the dead were all part of a same line of life, and their dead
were mummified and placed in mountains to reencounter with the Pacha
Mama -mother land-; the Spaniards and their catholic religion presented a
dual life conception, the one in the earth as a preparation for the eternal
life in the kingdom of God; they buried their dead whose souls ascended to
heaven or descended to hell.

This catholic conception is tied to the Chatholic institution and church,
and the priest's role working on behalf of the deceased. The church burials
were the rule then, and there was a rich and interesting logic to its
functioning. The prominent men and women of society who were deep believers
and good Christians, according to their place in the social pyramid were
buried inside the church, close to the altar, these was done because it was
then believed that the soul could ascend the Heavenly kingdom easily. That's
why, under the Colonial churches there are numerous archeological sites and
even some underground museums. After the vigil, the burial ceremony took
place, the body was shrouded with an ancient tunic illustrating the order to
which belonged and buried underground the church, one of the tiles in the
floor was lifted, and then placed back into the original scheme. there were
no marks or signs that indicated the location. However the family, present
at the moment of burial, knew exactly where it was and usually, chose to sat
on the nearby benches during mass.

Not everyone was buried in the church, as the obvious limitation of space
indicates; however, the most important factor was their place in society. It
was common that important yet not prominent society members were buried in
the limiting church lands. The rest of society usually was buried in common
holes, whereas the slaves were not even buried. The Protestants, at first,
being unworthy members of a strong catholic society, were only allowed to be
buried on the riverside benches. Then, in the 19th century with a prominent
British community living in Buenos Aires, special arrangements were made for
the Protestants to have their cemetery in the Chacarita district.

When the city began to grow in modern times' proportions, this burials
system was not suitable enough to provide service to a growing population;
the sanitarian system was soon to collapse. That was when the Recoleta
cemetery was open.

Syncretism is the key word here. If looked at carefully, Colonial religious art might on the surface be similar to European baroque or renaissance, but from a closer approach there?s a great number of details such as the local scene, animals, physical stereotype, etc, that emerge from the so called European imposed technique.

Popular shrines… one story on Gauchito Gil

In previous articles we’ve talked about the history and cultural meaning of popular “saints” in the Latin American region, and more specifically in Argentina. The fact that our modern culture is the result of a convergence of two (at least) very different subjective approaches to reality is what makes of Latin American Religious rituals interesting and appealing social conducts.

Gauchito Gil shrines can be found all throughout the Argentine routs, highways and roads, from the northernmost point in La Quiaca, to Ushuaia down in the southern extreme of our Republic. And if we approach this spectacular phenomena from a sociological and anthropological point of view, we will realize that Gauchito Gil symbolizes the need and devotion for heroes and prime human values, and considering the situation this country has gone through the last decade, and the lack of institutional role models opened a gap in which popular cultural modalities have raised upon the unsatisfied as to open a shred of light within such darkness.

If traditional sanctuary cult is linked to a pre-established organized devotion manner, embraced by the church in which the offering of prayers and candles take place; popular shrines –such as those of Gauchito Gil- offer no restrictions whatsoever for the faithful. Candles, flowers and rosaries, are indeed the linking element to traditional cult, but also, cigarettes, food offerings, letters, and personal belongings tie indeed deeply this form of cult to other kinds of religions, much in debt with the Incas, the Aymaras, the Aztecs and many other great civilizations that populated out broad continent way before the Spanish conqueror looked across the horizon seeking new sources of wealth and power. Along with the spade came the cross, and if the military conquest was fast but painful, the conquering of the soul harsher and everlasting has not yet said its last word.

The past weekend was a national holiday in Argentina linked in fact, to this matter of topic, the Spanish conquest. When driving, I was astonished by a Dante like scenario, when I saw a Gauchito Gil shrine on fire. It was too late to put it off, since it was burning almost everything. …………an accident, an excess of offerings, candles, cigarettes, etc, a bit of wind and it got all it lighten up… Passion and need of guidance, an excessive worshiping had burnt down the source to it.

Toys and Saints in this year’s Holly week in a small town in the Spanish province of Andalusia have been one of the most interesting joints for an official religious celebration.

We have been writing articles on the many road sanctuaries for a while now, and a constant within these stories is the fact that most of these shrines are not officially recognized by the Vatican or the local Church –as a Christian institution. These are in the majority of the cases popular cults that have grown within the most improvised social sectors, generally relaying in a local figure/emblem that after a life of sorrow and suffer has redeemed him or herself by doing a holy-like good deed, and soon after they suffer a tragic death; the key to understanding these cults has been the fact that these characters, after dead, work out miracles, and thereby are sanctified by the local believing population that incorporates them to their pantheon of Saints. Though in some cases the local preacher or parson is as a believer as the rest of the local population, in the most of the cases this is a popular way of appropriation of the Religion.
In these cases is also very frequent to witness the use of dolls and artisan like figurines that are objects of affection and devotion as an opposition to the official Roman Church relationship with Saints.

As we said above, this year’s Holly week in Spain presented a strange merge of these traditions. It’s a custom that during Holly week (when the world’s Catholic remember Christ’s death and resurrection, his sacrifice for humanity and evidence his divinity) the local churches take their Saints to the street processions celebrating Christ’s Holiness.
A reader of ours who’s originate from a small town in the Andalusia province in Spain –a truly devoted Catholic region- shared with us a wonderful story.
This year, by April the town’s Church was undergoing a restoration process and the locals couldn’t take the Church’s Saint to the procession.
Given the situation and considering the fact that this would have been the first time that there were no saints within the local’s procession, the town’s children spontaneously “donated” their dolls, Barbie’s and Action Men for the procession’s sake. They custom made Saint Outfit for their toys and since this year the Church Saints were unavailable for the celebration they offered their “own little every day saints”.
As follows you’ll be able to see photos of Barbie characterized as Virgin Mary and Action Man as Christ.
By all means this in no way a disrespect to the holiness of religion but a true example of how deep their faith and beliefs are. An example, a contemporary version in which these toys, dolls, appear as main role characters of their own reality.

The Cult of Death in Life

The cult to Saint Death in the northeast area of the Argentine Republic and southern Paraguay is a reality. This is obviously a pagan cult, for there’s no such thing as Saint Death within the Catholic Santeria. This specific cult –as many other religious re signification processes- emerged after the Jesuit companies were expelled from the northeast region of Argentina and southeast region of Paraguay in 1767. St Death, St Ceoneo and the Lord of the column were invented by the aborigines of the area after the Jesuit exile. This is what in anthropology is understood as syncretism; a process in which local ancestral traditions blend into the Conqueror’s religion, Catholicism. This is a re-signification process in which the new religion becomes a sort of unitary container inside of which we find a rainbow of cults that adopted the catholic form though eclectic and endowing of traditional religions and cults in terms of contents.
So what appears to have happened after the Jesuit departure is that the evangelization process that had taken place during the Jesuit Company’s control of the area left behind a Catholic hale on the surface without having finally penetrated into the heart of these peoples and their view of the world?

The best way to approach this matter through the conception of shape and content, surface and heart; so if we take in consideration the fact that these populations had been baptized and lived “allegedly” according to the Catholic law, we should also take into account that broad variety these of cultural and religious “casts and molds” did not penetrate deep into these culture’s traditions and view of the world.
Even more, before rushing into a cultural condemn of this cult to death we should take into consideration the fact that the perception of death as an end to life as well as the negative imaginary of “death’s evil side” tided to the possibility of hell and the inferno is a cultural product.

This view of life and death took full shape during the European middle ages under the cultural impact resulting of historical consolidation of the Catholic church and this particular monotheist religion. But meanwhile Europe’s heart and soul was conquered by the catholic church, the American continent –specially what in these days we know as Latin America- had a different cultural identity; a circular conception of time (confronting with the linear and positive evolution conception that prevailed in Europe) in which life and death were equally part of the living process. The Latin American polytheism clashed with the European monotheism, and to the conquering churches this pagan rituals instead of expressing cultural diversities, were a sing of demoniac worshiping.

Needn’t to explain that differences between societies are not to be understood as unilateral. But it’s important to point out the fact that a religious bond with death precedes the consolidation of Latin America’s Catholicism. It’s a link with the eternal circle of life, with our ancestors and those to come, and it’s in this way that this cult blended with Catholicism saints, it’s a patron like bond, something that cares from the greater beyond to guard earthy life.

Being this said about St Death patron origin, we can see how this cult evolved by means of syncretism. This Saint is capable both of good and evil. These practices are determined by the relationship the devoted establishes with this “deity”, returns and offerings.

Indeed this Saint is an interesting cultural expression of rites, beliefs and conception of the world.

Born with all a man could need for a peaceful and tranquil life, he chose his faith over his wealth; he chose those in needs and in pain over his selfish needs. He devoted his time and energy to all God’s creations, not just men but also animals, plants, etc. That’s why frequently images, carvings and statues evoking St Francis feature not only his figure dressed in the brown rustic tunic with a rope on the waist but also birds and wild animals surrounding him. According to his biographers he had a special sensitivity to perceive God’s essence in each and every one of his creations; hence, resisting the body’s impact and listening to his soul, St Francis approached each and every one of God’s creatures with such kindness and purity of heart that not even wild wolfs attacked him.



The most well known among his votes to God are the poverty and charity; these are to be understood according a whole different way of living. His order composed by brothers with no hierarchy between them, detached from all material aspects of life wondered around the known world spreading the Gospel with the highest example of all, their own lives. Traveling on their bare feet and living upon other’s charity, they shared all they had with those who needed it the most, the ill, the sick and handicapped.

This was the first order to question the Catholic Church in some of its doings and nonetheless be accepted and incorporated to the Vatican in Rome by the Pope’s orders, giving birth to the Franciscans’ order. Soon after, the same Pope Innocence III recognized as part of the Church the Dominican order too.

St. Francis was the man of peace, solidarity, closeness and friendship; when the moment came of him to live in God's time, he remained peaceful for he knew he was protected by God's supreme power… Even St Francis, a man of unquestionable good knew he wasn’t completely pure nor he perceived perfectly and transparently the grace of God, but he felt peace in his heart knowing he was in His hands…

Two years after he passed to a better life in the Kingdom of Heaven, Pope Gergory canonized him.



Since the 11th century on, St Francis has been a role model to all Catholics world wide for his passion and love to those around him, for his decision to live the way Jesus did.

All and all, Franciscans because of these sacred vows were the most suitable priests to spread the gospel around the world, specially to the new world when it was discovered in 1492 by Columbus. Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits were the main orders who rooted in Spanish America, from Mexico to southernmost Argentina and Chile. Hence the impact on the popular culture of the region very devoted to these order’s main saints and deeply influenced by it’s beliefs.

The countless amount of convents and monasteries throughout the American continent is outstanding as well as the numbers of priests and religious immigrants the continent received from colonial times to our days.

Specialists and scholars have dig in this religious American world through means of the prolific Art remains that were found in all these religious centers.

Religious Sanctuaries along the roads of Argentina

Sanctuaries in Buenos Aires

The bond between religion and society in Latin America is tide and important. It has been since Colonial times when Church and Conquerors were two sides of a same coin. The need of civilizing the natives was not just a matter of society but a matter of soul and religion, they said. And so it was. Two cultures, two different worlds encountered. It was not peaceful, it was harsh, it was the only way a conquest could be: rich, traumatic, conciliatory, and harsh on the generations to come. It was a subversion of the way things were until then, and religion and morality were not excepted from the main alteration flow brought to the American Continent from Europe. It's important to point out that this was not a one way street of influence, but the result of mutual influences in different degrees and amounts considering the time, the strength and many more aspects that are to be considered when analyzing what happened then. There's no question about the fact that Latin American Catholicism is not the same as the one in Rome, in spite of the fact that the relationship is unquestionable. It's very much mixed with local influences that harden some trends, such as sanctuaries along the road, worshiping the appearances of the Virgin Mary and several important saints. One of the most interesting features are the many "new" saints, specific from Latin America that have made a great appearance and are highly appreciated. Along the roads throughout every country you'll find amazing sanctuaries, big, small, highly elaborated or very simple ones. All of them portray the saint's image, surrounded by flowers and small "tokens" of affection such as candles, rosaries, written prayers.

Such is the case of the Gauchito Gil in Argentina, which can be seen as just a mere example of the way these cults evolve from reality to mythology. May be that's the key to understanding these deep and profound religious movements, that the origin of them can be traced throughout time to a real moment in history when this blessed souls made their first appearance and healed the weak and defenseless, the one who needed the most the help of God 's doing. The story behind the beloved image of Gauchito Gil is located in Corrientes, a northeast province of Argentina limiting with Brazil and Paraguay. Gauchito Gil was sort of a Robin Hood of corrientes, fighting the powerful in the name of the poor, hated by the local policeman and his men, one of them assassinated Gauchito Gil while he was defenseless, by cutting his throat. This first part of the story would not be worshiping material of any kind, but the impressive thing was that soon after the head policeman killed Gauchito Gil, his son got very ill, and it was Gauchito Gil the one who healed him. That was the beginning of the legend, over 100 years ago and it has been growing and developing throughout the littoral part of the country ever since. People say that the legend traveled mainly with truck drivers, a very devoted part of the population that follows Gauchito Gil, and that it was them who began to build some of the most important sanctuaries by the edge of National highways throughout the country.

Religions tours in Buenos Aires, Argentina.


Visiting foreign lands and discovering pleasure in traveling is not an unhistorical activity, it actually dates from the Middle Ages. Back then, the main "tourist attraction" throughout the known world were Sanctuaries, such as Santiago de Compostela in Spain or Jerusalem in the Middle East among many others. It was back then, when locals who lived nearby the main roads to these pilgrim places decided to turn their house into a lodging for the travelers, or even turn the local tavern into a homey dinner. Here fore, ladies and gentlemen, there's one of the many origins of hotels and restaurants.

If we consider these facts as an early beginning for tourism, then there's no novelty about the latest religious tours. They existed for hundreds and hundreds of years, for after those pilgrim places lost their initial strength there were some other new ones uprising. Rome and the Vatican city, as well as Belen and Jerusalem are fine examples of this sort of tourism.



When I found about all this information I was amazed. It's really interesting to discover the beginning of a tradition that we've already take for granted. I actually had no idea of the power of Saints back in the middle ages. I found out they were somewhat a key to understand a very varied chirstianism. This mini investigation led me to some new doubts about Christianity and the way this religion has evolved throughout history. To my surprise, I not only got to understand a bit better one of the most important beliefs in society, I have a long lost relative that has been sanctified: Saint Paola Frassinetti. Awesome! isn't it?

For she's my family, or I'm her family, or actually, she's family with all of us for she's God's child.... Anyway, I searched for information on her and I found out about her interesting life:

Her mother dies when Paola is only nine, and this young kid has to substitute her mother in all her labors. Life is hard to her, but she carries on helping her father and family. Her first Holy Communion and her brother Giuseppe's ordination are moments of deep reflection for her who already feels, in the depth of her heart, the divine call. She'll be patient and await until God's time. According to the Vatican biography on her "at the age of 19 she is physically tired owing to the strenuous rhythm which her life as a precocious mother imposes on her, and her brother, Father Giuseppe, who is parish priest at Quinto, offers her hospitality for some time. The pure air of Quinto proves beneficial to her delicate health. Parish life affords her the opportunity of doing good, as little by little, her gentle ways attract the youth of the neighborhood. Every Sunday they go to the woods to speak about God. These encounters occur often and soon other young girls join the group. Paula reveals to them the secrets of a life totally dedicated to God, and she discovers her vocation as an educator. An enthusiastic group which lives in communion of love, forms itself around Paula". The turns of life would take her to do her good through education and commitment to the Church, and soon the Sisters of Faith would become Sisters of Saint Dorothy when they take on Father Luca Passi's work when his time has come to join God in Heaven. In 1844 the Pope entrusts Paula with the direction of the Conservatory of S. Maria del Rifugio at S. Onofrio. By her gentleness and charity Paula transforms the place, and because of her presence and activity S. Onofrio becomes the Mother House.
In 1846 an anticlerical spirit spreads throughout Italy. In Genoa even the Dorotheans are molested and the daughters of Paula are exposed to suffering.
Persecution reaches Rome: Pius IX, who has succeeded Gregory XVI, is obliged to take refuge at Gaeta, and Cardinals, Bishops and Prelates all leave Rome. Paula remains alone.
Paula feels that her earthly days are coming to a close. It is the dawn of June 11, 1882: She is serene, and her passing away is tranquil thus bringing into evidence the richness of her life, as she invokes the Blessed Virgin whom she has always loved so much: " My Mother, remember I am your child ". On June 8, 1930 Paula is declared blessed, and on March 11, 1984, the bells of Saint Peter's ring out again to announce that Paula is a Saint.
What a fantastic story! I believe there are hundreds of these sort of life experiences that can be treasured and are of great interest.
After knowing about this long lost relative of mine, I began to search the facts about Saints and local cults in Argentina.
The result was fantastic, not only there are fabulous buildings related to it such as churches and masques, temples and sanctuaries, but the story behind each cult is fascinating. Taking two of the most extraordinary saint cults in Argentina there is the one on the Blessed Virgin of Itat?, guardian of the Corrientes Province, and the annual peregrination to the Gauchito Gil Sanctuary also in Corrientes. This location, however is not a stop to the general admiration and devotion to these popular saints. During the last few years, they've extended from local cults to national proportions ones. And one is able to trace this spreading out down through route side small sanctuaries.
The bond established with the popular public is unquestionable. At the same time, there's a conflict of interests established between the Church and these popularly sanctified characters. The situation is not new to Latin Americans specially, for their relationship with the Roman Church has been quite complicated since the beginning of colonial times, for the way local cults and beliefs blended and merged with the Christian cult has not always been approved by the hierarchy in Rome. It is not our job to judge this relationship or its implications, we just want to share with the travelers interested in religions some of Argentina's spiritual, social, cultural and architectural heritage linked to all these cults and religions. The cultural richness implied in these sorts of cults is amazing; and it opens up as an alternative door through which to understand and get to know the Argentina.
