Miller & Hillyer portrait artists of New York
Topic: Miller & Hillyer
New inputs on Miller & Hillyer portrait artists of New York

Many years ago, in one of our weekend antique and art hunts, we found an interesting work of art. The portrait was from Don M. C. Rodriguez. Doctor and his initials are, "M.E" or "M.C". We believe he was a Diplomat in the year 1846 or around that time, in New York City but born or from Chile, as well as a being a strong "defendant of the natives, or native tribes of Chile." Something very uncommon in those days, and we are still researching and looking for information on this gentleman, so any help would be welcomed ......This portrait painted by Miller & Hillyer in 1848 in New York, USA.

For a long time we were seeking for information on these artists. We found some that was posted immediately in our site, but the search was hard and tough. No information was available… Until now, that we’ve managed to get through directly to the source: the New York Historical Society. Alice Gringlod, from the New York Historical Society Library was kind enough to forward us the information available on the matter to help us unveil the mystery behind this work of art and the artists who made it.

These books provide us with an interesting insight:
 “Who was who in American Art -1564/1975-: 400 years of artists in America”, Vol 2, Madison, CT: Sound View Press, 1999,
 George C. Groce and Davide H Wallace: “The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860”, New Haven, Yale University press, London University press, 1957.

Miller & Hillyer firm consisted in two partners William H. Miller and William Hillyer, and after 1859 Stephen Krauss joins them for a sole year, for after 1860, the firm will once again be Miller & Hillyer. 1962 would be a turning point, for the introduction of portrait photography will make them give up miniature painting for the more technological option.

William H. Miller was a Portrait and miniature painter as well as a photographer, born in 1820 in England.
He lived in NYC active 1836 until after 1860 (After 1854 he made his home in Brooklyn).
Exhibits: American Institute fair. Miller & Hillyer exhibited 17 portraits and won second best portrait in oil price in 1846 Hillyer exhibited independently in 1847 and 1849.Work; NYHS. Coments: From 1846 to after 1869 he worked in partnership with William Hillyer.

Hillyer William Jr was a Portrait and miniature painter as well as a photographer born in Morrisiana.
Exhibits: American Academy (1833); National Academy (1835-36) and the American Institue in 1849. Miller & Hillyer exhibited 17 portraits at the American Institute Fair and won second best portrait in oil price in 1846. Hillyer exhibited independently in 1849.

According to the information available in the “Catalog of American portraits in the New York Historical Society”, Vol 2 m-z, New Haven and London, Yale University Press, 1974, these are the paintings reviewed by the Historical society:

--Unidentified Gentlemen
#2357 By William H Miller and William Hillyer Jr. 1846. Oil on Canvass; 34 ? x 27 inches. Inscribed on the back “Painted by Miller and Hillyer/ New York/1946.
Source unknown, X.119.

Miller & Hillyer
Topic: Miller & Hillyer
Miller & Hillyer,Portrait Artist.

Miller & Hillyer of New York,portrait artist firm.William H Miller 1820 - 1907 & William Hillyer 1815 - 1907.

Some strange things do turn up in Buenso Aires. Over ten years ago, in Quilmes, Quilmes being also a trade mark of a well known brand of beer, for those beer lovers readers we have, well back on with Quilmes,an important city in the Greater Buenos Aires, a anme of a trip of original people as well on South AMerica, gave me one small joy, an un-a-custemed one for those years.

The painting I own is, a portrait of Don M.C.Rodriguez.
Oil painting on canvas.Poor condition.
29 x 35 1/2 inches.

"Rodriguez", Doctor and his initials are, "M.E" or "M.C". Diplomat in the year 1846 or around that year, in New York city but born or from Chile, as well as a "defendant of the natives, or native tribes of Chile."

Painted by Miller & Hillyer in 1848 in New York,USA.

What I know abut the artist(s) .......Profession: Portrait and miniature painters till 1862, they then took up as photographers/portrais.

Exhibited: American Institute Fair (1846: the firm exhibited 17 portraits and was awarded a diploma for the second-best portrait in oil)

Work: The New York Historical Society.
The New-York Historical Society is located at
2 West 77th Street at Central Park West.USA.
(212) 873-3400

Comments: The partners were William H. Miller, William Hillyer, and, after 1859, Stephen Krauss (see entries on each). From 1846-58, the firm was Miller & Hillyer; from 1859-60 they were Miller, Hillyer & Krauss; after 1860 they were Miller & Hillyer once again. After 1862 the partners turned to photography and gave up miniature painting.

-The following biography I was able to find on the web.I have extracted some for illustration purpose of the quality of the artist and his history.

" from Jim Sazevich of St. Paul, Minnesota, who has done genealogical research on the William Hillyer, Sr. family and "would like to offer this information to you for inclusion on your list of artist's biographies."(AskART)

William Hillyer, Jr., was born March 1815, in Portsmouth, England, the
son of William and Sarah (Earwicker) Hillyer. William, Jr. was brought
to the United States at age four, and in 1822 his family settled in New
York City.

He was taught the trade of carpentry by his father, but in his youth his love for art blossomed, and in his teen years he was already busy sketching the portraits of his Lower Manhattan neighbors. From the 1830s to the 1860s, Hillyer worked from a variety of portraiture studios he operated in his neighborhood. He apparently also worked for some time in Philadelphia.

He married Mary Gumbs in New York City, about 1835, and the couple had several children. By 1870, William, Jr. had moved his family to Champaign, Illinois, where he bought a farm and spent the remainder of his life. It is believed that he continued painting until his death in 1904, but for the last three decades of his life, his main occupation was farming. He and his wife
are buried in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Champagne, Illinois."
