"What I expect from any work of art is that it surprises me,
that it violates my customary valuations of things
and offers me other, unexpected ones.
Jean Dubuffet

I am for an art that is political-erotical-mystical,
that does something other than sit on its ass in a museum.
Claes Oldenburg"

Martin Di Girolamo was born in September 9th 1965 in Buenos Aires. He studied Art at the National School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredon in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A private interview with the artist Maria Eugenia Villaseca, a visitor to arteBA 2007.  In here “the LOVE and the FURIÁ”  the exhibition that Maria Eugenia Villaseca inaugurated in the Galleria Animal, Chile, the 20 of March 2006. A sample of her art work may make a bit more than a statemnet, she denounces the great myths found in the sexuality and especially in the world of childhood and its importance in the vital world of art & space, a clean cut view from a artist who understands her subject and maybe induced or touched from a biographical point of view she commits a contingent character, placeing it in her art work.

Topic: Arte BA
Arte BA 2006, Buenos Aires, Contemporary art show, Nacional & Internacional.

Art BA is finishing today; one of the largest and most important Art Gallery & Artist shows in Latin America is finishing its 15th edition with a top concurrence.
Yesterday at its peak of visitors and experts, Art Dealer’s Bob & Flor visited the show, talked to the artists, the passersby and experts. The place was crowded, filled with Art lovers, artists, painters, journalists, collectors, experts of all kinds and curious parties too.

ARTE BA 2006 EVENT in Buenos Aires Argentinaartdealer_ar's ARTE BA 2006 EVENT in Buenos Aires Argentina photoset

The innovation in style and presentation is at its top in this Argentine cultural event. The latest technology in illumination and presentation gave each and every piece a unique sense and made of each a statement. Mainly focused on new and contemporary artists, Art BA works on the edge of new art, featuring techniques and styles of latest productions. Therefore, this new focus on contemporary implied a displacement of traditional painters and artists from galleries.

Showing the movement of one of the strong art markets in Argentina and the world, ArteBA is nothing but an example of the shift within a growing area of the gallery industry, focusing mainly on providing art for decor, affordable and contemporary art.
Inspiring and eclectic, this new art fair provides an interesting place for the modern individual who wants more, in a way that can be afforded and displayed for the pleasure of the eye and with a self sense of style. The event was a success, the concurrence was broad as the organizers fulfilled their intention of opening the contemporary art scene to the Latin American and American public.

ARTE BA 2006 EVENT in Buenos Aires
Topic: Arte BA
ARTE BA EVENT in Buenos Aires

For over 15 years Arte BA foundation contributes to the growth and development of Latin Americas Fine Arts. From May 19th to the 24th this Continental event featuring the most outstanding Art Galleries and art oriented projects will take place in the heart of Buenos Aires, at the La Rural show center.

Sixty three Galleries from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain, USA, Uruguay and Venezuela are showing their finest pieces and sharing their world expertise in the field.

The ever-growing cultural offer in Buenos Aires is now featuring new trends of growth and varied approaches to the world of fine arts. Whilst the idea of Art solely targeted for the appreciation of experts and a selected crowd was dethroned years ago, the interesting counterpart of the growth in spaces and public eyes observing is not only the fact that now the masses take part in the artistic creation as spectators, but also that the art oriented spaces have broaden featuring diverse artistic expressions.
ARTEBA is a true expression of this trend. For 15 years, this non profit organization has been organizing mass art shows. This year, there are over 1000 pieces being showed.

Coupling with the main art show, this years event is also featuring sections such as the young quarter –a special avant-garde area for developing artists-, as well as lecture and discussion round tables under the lei-motif the cultural institutions and media. This years’ edition is awarding honor diplomas to the famous local artists: Marta Minujin, Antonio Segui, Rogelio Polesello and Luis Benedit. Last years’ homage was for the Master Vito Campanella.

Vito Campanella at his Studio in Buenos Aires
Topic: Vito Campanella
Vito Campanella at home in his study in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

As part of our research work in the local Art scene we were able to contact Vito Campanella directly. The renamed artist whose paintings are world wide appreciated is an approachable and nice man. After a couple of phone calls we finally arranged a meeting at his atelier. We had a wonderful time chatting with him, enjoying his works and his life experiences.

Here are some insightful photos of our visit. Enjoy!

Please contact us directly upon any question or commentary on this article, the photos or his works. Vito Campanella is one of the best surrealist artists of the twentieth century. His master of technique and concept is outstanding while the power of his works is stunning as they impact on many levels on the spectator, a true feast to the senses.
He was born in the portside township of Monopoli, Bari-Italy, in 1932. Son of a great musician, Vito was in touch with his artistic side from the cradle; soon after he was born his father decided it was time to quit touring around and he settled down opening a magnificent bookstore. The Arts, indeed, were part of his life from the very beginning. However his early years were unquestionably bitter sweet for he and his family lived nearby a military port, so during the years of the Second World War his life was quite hectic. Soon his father would pass away, and his brother Leonardo would set the trace for the future of the family; Leo was the first one to leave Italy towards Argentina. Vito who was in his early twenties at the moment decided to stick around Italy for a while, living a bohemian life, exploring the Arts and the beauty of the boot-shaped country.

Firenze –Florence- was to become home; soon he would move to the beautiful city of Milan and study at the Brera Academy. Later on young Vito began to take all sorts of courses and began to forge his way into the world of ateliers, canvases, brushes and oil painting. It was then when he went through a life changing experience by working with Giorgio De Chirico in his workshop. It was then when Campanella would meet one of his other masters Salvador Dali who at the time was living momentarily in Milan.

Campanella refers to his relationship with Dali “At first I had a good relationship with him, but then when I went to visit him to Port Lligat –in Figueres- I commented on one of his paintings, he was not pleased with my words and kicked me out of his house… You know Dali behaved like this…”

Not much time would go by until he crossed the Atlantic to Argentina. It was 1955, Vito Campanella was only 22 years old when Buenos Aires became his home by choice.

His artistic work in the southern Pampas’ land began slowly. For many years his main activity was art-publicity especially in Argentina, but also in Brazil and Peru. Simultaneously he would continue working on his art, developing his technique and his very particular aesthetic.

Just a bit more than a decade after his arrival to Buenos Aires, in 1968 he held his first important Art show at the famous Witcomb Gallery on Florida St. Such was the success –he sold each and every one of the exhibited works- that it was a turning point in his life, from then on he would fully surrender to his gift and passion: Art.
Though Campanella exhibits a unique surrealist style, many critics and art specialists have tended to define him as an Italian Dali or De Chirco-influenced. Nothing better than Mr. Vito’s own words to define his style “I would say that my paintings are Campanella styled works, I recognize a variety of influences –as every human being- but I believe I have achieved a personal style… I think critics sometimes tend to label things to fast in a somewhat arbitrary manner.”

Campanella’s surrealism is indeed dream inspired; combined with a Renaissance aesthetic inspiration especially regarding the palette, working specially on the chiaroscuro.

I must agree with Vito Campanella’s remark, he has developed a true and unique sense of style and aesthetic, debtor of many and of none, for he incorporated the influence into a whole new and own system.

His works are currently being exhibited at the famous Galleria Degli Uffizi. Private Galleries from the US, France, Belgium, Spain and Japan feature his works too.

In May, Buenos Aires offers the art lover public another fabulous event. Combining the BOBO feel of the city, ARTEBA emphasizes the joy of culture in all it’s aspects, fine music and ambiance, a hip and modern lounge in which to relax and discuss possible purchases…

Among the many great options to be found are:

A series of colored photo- collage by Antonio Berni from the 70s, Roberto Kazuya Sakai’s geometrical epoch and two exhibits of his 1960s in formalism Jorge De la Vega’s imponent masterpieces, Susana Lescano, Mateo Arguello Pitt and Raul Diaz, Juan Doffo’s artistic photographs and Eugenio Cuttica. Gabriela Aberasturi, Estela Pereda, Ides Kihlen, Alfonso Castillo, Ma. Cristina Fresca, Iratxe Larreay, Jose Luis Anzizar, Hect. Medici, Perez Celis, Poupee Tessio, Rosmarie Allers, Susana Peluffo, Ana Maria Martina and Rosita Keller among other great artists.

Among the art galleries participating we can point out: Principium, Jorge Mara, Daniel Maman, Estudio de Arte, Debbie Frydman and Dharma Fine Arts, Palatina, Archimboldo, Rubbers Internacional, Arte x Arte, Hoy en el Arte, Jaques Martinez, Transarte… among many others.

ARTEBA 2004
LA CONTINUIDAD DE UN CLASICO.

Mayo 2004.
