Auctions in Buenos Aires are a great option for collectors, art and antique dealers and gallery owners from around the globe.

The fact that Latin American art is growing worldwide in terms of prestige and acceptance is clear to us all. During the late 90s it was Christie’s auction house the pioneer who saw the market evolution line in the world of Latin American Art, Antiques and Collectibles. Back then the major and oldest auction house in the world and Argentina’s finest and most traditional auction house Naon, joined ventures to work in the local market. Since then, several auctioneers from around the globe began to work in the country. Sotheby’s owns an auction house in Buenos Aires, working very well.

Old Tractors found in Argentina

The mass use of tractors in Argentina only began when those machines were locally produced in the 1950s –without the importation costs, these machines were much more affordable; plus there were local tractor versions that had been specially designed for the standard Argentinean field. The first imported tractors were powered by steam engines. The application of these kind of engines to tractors was revolutionary for the need of a controlled use of power was very much important in these kind of locomotives. John Deere was one of the main providers to Argentina of these machines. Soon after this invention took off, tractors suffered some alterations, such as the replacement of steam engines for diesel or kerosene ones. Some of the main international manufacturers provided the Argentine market at that time. But it wasn’t till mid 1940s when Argentina took the autoindustry in its hands. The folk story tells that Perón, who had established a love-hate relationship with the United States had broken up all commercial tides, and while Argentina stoped selling them some of the most important prime materials the US bought, they wouldn’t sell one manufactured item to the country. One of the most famous frases at that time was “If the US wants to paint their houses with our line oil they’ll have to bring their houses down to Argentina…”the reply of some of the most liberal sectors in our country was –regarding the importance of our importation of toilet paper manufactured in the US- “so, when we want to go to the toilette we might as well travel all the way up to the States for some toilette paper?”. No house came to Argentina, and no one traveled that much for some toilette paper, but the impact of this closure was huge. In 1948, Perón inaugurated the IAME –mechanical industry company owned and run by the Argentinean state- with the aim of producing tractors in the country. A very large group of experts began took over the titanic task of creating from scraps a mechanical industry. The first move this group made was a survey on what local farmers preferred on this matter. The most voted answer was the German Lanz Bulldog, produced in Mannheim, for it had a simple motor that could be easily fixed if there was any trouble, it only needed heating before use, and this could be done using lamps powered by a kerosene pump, hence there was no need of electrical power… Plus this tractor’s motor could be worked with alternative combustibles –at that time Diesel fuels were very expensive and rare to find in the country- such as a mix of kerosene and used oil, or even regular oil and animal fat. It served it purpose in the fields and it was very cheap to maintain. And its power was enough to remove the old steam boilers for thrashing line and wheat machines. The inspiration came from the Lanz German tractor. Many units of this machine were brought to the country and mechanics and technicians began to work on a “national model” tractor with a two time motor with only one cylinder of 55HP, that could traction a four plowshare of 14 inches. The result was a local very cheap version christen as the Pampa. There were 3500 Pampas made in the country from 1952 to 1963. At the same time, some other companies began to settle down in the country to locally produce tractors, for it was economically more profitable than exporting them and there was an unexploded market anxiously demanding these products. Fiat Conrad was one of the first ones to come to Argentina in 1954. Later on came John Deere in 1958. Two of the most important ones at the time, adapting many of their models to the local market as well as offering their standard ones to the Argentine market. The move was a success. The National Museum of Fine Arts Buenos Aires

The Museum and a bit of its History. The National Museum of Fine Arts, known in Spanish as el Museo de Bellas Artes, and by its initials, MNBA. The Building is located on the Avenue of the Liberator number 1473 in the Recolecta area, of the City of Buenos Aires. The building dates from 1870 and in what was once used and known as the old House of Pumps, building that was owned and run as part of the water works of the neighbourhood Recoleta and by the Sanitary Works of the Nation, OSN.

Inaugurated on the 23 of May of 1933, with the presence of the then President of the Nation, Agustin P Justo and with the help of the Association of Friends of the Museum, that had been created the 22 of October of 1931. From its inauguration to the present days, the museum has been modernized and updated with several reforms. In 1961 a new Pavilion was added.

Art Argentina History Topic: Art Modern Art in Argentina The evolution of nouvelle art lines has always been a reflection of a deeper kind of evolution that is a new world conception growing and developing in society. By 1810 what was soon to become Argentina was breathing the new waves of modernity thru means of the influx of the newest trends of thought exported by the French Revolution. We can see the sub terrain impact of the influence in a critical breaking point evidenced by the fading of the seeming ever strong religious theme proper of Colonial times. In stead, there was an evident growth of pictorial activities featuring portraits and custom like scenes. In the early days of the 19th century, the flow of immigration to Argentina was nothing compared to what it would become by mid 1800; however, the southern American vice royal capital received a large number of international artists who temporarily relocated to our country. It’s interesting to see the evidence of the influence our region had on these artists and their works, for you can see how they blended with the local feel, for their works exhibit insightful scenes of every day customs and life in the River Plate. An English sailorman Emeric Essex Vidal (1791-1861), left behind when he returned to his homeland, a set of water colors with text that offer an amazing snap shot of our region’s past. Carlos Enrique Pellegrini (1800-1875), an Italian engineer who came to the River Plate to work on developing public services, ended up taking upon oil painting in the rough days of the Independent wars when all public administration was put on hold. Adolfo D'Hastrel (1805-1875), was yet another sailorman who while in Argentina developed a collection of drawings and watercolors. Cesar Hipolito Bacle (1790-1838), developed a lithography collection on outfits and customs of the province of Buenos Aires. Raimundo Monvoisin (1790-1870) and Mauricio Rugendas (1802-1858) were yet two other foreign artists who left a durable mark in our artistic history. Monvoisin who lived in Buenos Aires and latter on relocated to Chile, was the man, mind and hands behind Gaucho Federal and La porteña en el Templo. Rugendas, on the other hand created outstanding Works such as Desembarco de pasajeros en Buenos Aires and Mariquita Sanchez de Mendivillie’s portrait. Throughout the 19th century, Argentine artists of great skills such as Carlos Morel (1813-1894) and Prilidiano Pueyrredon (1823-1873), left a perdurable mark in our history of Arts. Another turning point in the development of the Arts in Argentina would become when reaching the middle of the century. It was then when a group of young artists began to actively participate in the organization of Artistic institutions such as the Fine Art Stimulus Society, the National Museum of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts. These innovations were the result of a tight bong established between the group and the nouvelle art movements that were taking place in the old continent. Eduardo Sivori’s fine Works and style would be considered as the introductory of naturalism in Argentina, evoking eloquently the Argentine country side traditional folkways theme. Angel Della Valle took upon the challenge and followed Sivori’s style adding a true personal flavor. Reinaldo Giudice (1853-1927) and Ernesto de La Carcova (1866-1927) brought to Argentina a formal repertoire of neoclassic, romantic and naturalist elements adapting these techniques to the newly born cultural context of Argentina. The new century came together with new impulses within the local art scene. The introduction of impressionism was done by Martin Malharro (1865-1911). Malharro along with Faustino Brughetti (1877-1956), Walter de Navazio (1887-1919) and Ramon Silva (1890-1919), turned the Argentine painting history upside down, when their landscape works began to become the true star of our artistic world. Argentine specialists on the evolution of the local art scene agree in pointing the age of the 1920s as the turning point in the Argentine Arts. It was then when a true modernization of the plastic language took place. Working all together, at the same time, were Emilio Petorutti, Group of Paris, Alfredo Guttero, Xul Solar, the Artists of the People, the La Boca group among others. Them all, from a broad variety of formal and ideological angles, began to question the local state of art. They began to develop a parallel art scene apart from the official organizations and created open spaces for new artists far away from the cannon, allowing experimentation, self definitions and exploration of new aesthetic lines… The ever growing and developing art scene was a reflection of a Cultural Revolution taking place in the country. From this moment on, the arts in Argentina will evolve and revolt constantly, positioning our country in the list of culturally at the avant-garde in the international scene.

This outstanding San Telmo Market was built back in 1897 by the famous architect Juan Antonio Buschiazzo. Combining a typically modern Italian fa¿ade with a more English styled inside made in iron and glass, the San Telmo Market place is not only a tourist sight and trade mark -this is the last monument of it's kind... but an ode to our past and traditions there are no further market buildings currently working as products markets in the city.

The construction of this gorgeous building expresses a very particular and special time in Argentina's history, for in 1880 Buenos Aires is finally declared the nation's capital city, and soon after this turning point in our history, BA' mayor, Torcuato de Alvear begins to carry on the ambitious modernization of the city. Architect Juan Antonio Buschiazzo will play a crucial role both in the public administration and the construction and architectural field designing modern Market places, hospitals, public buildings, churches, cemeteries and particular buildings...

Most people around the globe might know the story of “Evita, don’t cry for me Argentina” thanks to pop star Madonna's performance in the musical film under the same name, or well thru means of the Broadway or Piccadilly Circus show. However Evita is as much as or even more than the ideal picture of a blond woman addressing the masses from some balcony on a Presidential Palace of South America, a Pink House balcony; especially to a great many of Argentines whose lives changed completely thanks to her doings. But we are not here to judge her, only to let you know about her. Before Evita, and before Evita was Evita, women in Argentina didn't vote, didn't evolve in Politics, and didn't do the many other things that would take a paper itself to enumerate. She was to be known as the ambassador of the Poor thanks to her broad charitable work. She was born as Maria Eva Duarte. In the early 40s she became Eva Peron, but the masses christened her as Evita. She soon transformed into a role model who broke the traditional moulds upon which women in Argentina were shaped. She turned the page in history and politics and thru a brief moment, changed the possibilities for the less privileged in our country. Side by side, her husband the famous General Peron, she became the alma mater of a novel political movement that was christened Peronismo, a populist political movement that altered Argentina's history for once and for all. Nothing was the same after her. She was a turning point, the first female turning point in our recent history. Evita, was either beloved or hated, but no one was indifferent to her and her doings. The poor loved her, while society women despised her for altering the state of things. Maria Eva Duarte was born in Los Toldos, a small town in the province of Buenos Aires in 1919. She spent her childhood in Junin, another town in the B’s A’s province after her father died a couple of years after she was born. At age 15 she feels restrained in her small hometown and moves to Buenos Aires, the big city to become an actress. Her success wouldn't be immediate, but she would achieve every one of the goals she sets for herself. Her life would change in January 1944. At a Charitable event on behalf of the victims of a horrendous earthquake that had hit the province of San Juan a couple of days ago, she meets the then, Coronel Juan Doming Peron. They would immediately fall in love, and marry only two years after. By February 1946, Peron would become president of our country and she would be a valuable ally, becoming the direction of the female branch of the peronist movement. Her political work had both a strong political and social imprint. Thru means of the Eva Peron Foundation she would build hospitals, nursing homes for the elder or single mothers, schools, and much more. Her charisma was impressive, and her popularity grew at an outstanding rate. Her speeches were of an amazing strength and power: as she says in her own words, “When I chose to become Evita, I know I chose the path of my people. Today, four years after I made that choice, I find it very easy to prove I did as I said” “No one except my people call me Evita” “The shirtless workers were the only ones who did so. Men of power, politicians, ambassadors, businessmen, intellectuals, professionals, who visit me don't ever call me Evita, they address me as Madam, and they see me as nothing else but Eva Peron. But the shirtless, on the other hand, don't know me but as Evita. I introduced myself to them as such the day I met with the humble ones of my land, for I said that I'd rather be Evita to them than the Wife of the President”, if Evita was in any way, she was an aid to mitigate some of the pain and sorrow they were going thru, the poor and dominated classes of the workers. “If you were to ask me which of these forms I prefer I would immediately answer: I best like it the name my people gave me, my fellow argentines, brothers, the humble of my land” Evita had a brief and fugacious life. She suffered a dreadful cancer, and passed away on July 26th 1952 at a very young age. National Mourning lasted over 14 days, but people still grief her death today. The Plaza de Mayo and the Pyramid seen from Defensa Street

Plaza de Mayo and the Pyramid in its center as we know it today are the representation of Independent Argentina. The original plaza was the Plaza Mayor of the Colony but along with the Revolution of Independence came a new denomination for public spaces: it became Victory Plaza when Buenos Ares defeated the English invaders and after the Revolution of Independence. It was then, also, when the Pyramid was constructed. It was conceived as an Obelisk that would be the center point of the city, however, it transformed into a pyramid in 1856 by Prilidiano Pueyrredon.
