Part III.

Opposites that complement

It is more than common to listen to someone advise you about relationships
and love stating that opposites complement each other. That what you see as
a deep difference is somewhat a nice and interesting ingredient that would
spice up your relationship rather than annul it. As every other aspect of
common knowledge, this statement has a sort of scientific background that
sustains it.
Tracing back the concept to the beginning of the twentieth century, or the
latest years of the nineteenth, we discover that nature itself behaves
through means of complementation of opposites. A quick and easy answer to
what I've stated might be "Dah, night and day, heaven and earth, good and
evil". Well, may be. These are opposites, that's correct, they complement
each other while at the same time the other has to be excluded. And what I'm
trying to say is that complementation stands upon non exclusion, a
contradictory living together.
In the world of physics, an outstanding and revolutionary scientist under
the name of Niels Bohr discovered complementarity, and understood it as a
corresponding principle. Bohr said that light was not either a wave or a
particle, but was both a wave and a particle. Knowledge of both these very
different aspects was necessary for a complete description of light; either
one without the other was inadequate. He and the fellows he worked with
stated later on : "The common division of the world into subject and object,
inner world and outer world, body and soul is no longer adequate...Natural
science does not simply describe and explain nature; it is part of the
interplay between nature and ourselves." This is the contradictory living
together I was talking about before.
Though Bohr was a physicist, and his assumptions about the way our
subjectivity develops were not taken very seriously. Not at least until Carl
Jung retook them. Like Bohr, Jung repudiated the conventional doctrine of
causality. He proposed that all human events interweave on a plane to which
we are not consciously privy, so that in addition to prosaic cause and
effect, human events are joined in a higher dimension by meaning. The
principles of synchronicity and complementarity, bridging as they do the
very separate domains of the psyche and the physical world, apply as well to
the connection between art and physics.
In 1955 Jung states his ideas very clearly while saying: "The common
background for microphysics and depth-psychology is as much physical as
psychic and therefore neither, but rather a third thing, a neutral nature
which can at most be grasped in hints since in essence it is transcendental.
The background of our empirical world thus appears to be in fact an unus
mundus. ... The transcendental psychophysical background corresponds to a
`potential world' in so far as those conditions which determine the form of
empirical phenomena are inherent in it".

But, unlike Bohr, who thought complementarity through means of different
observation points, whether at one the light was wave and the other particle
depending on how we looked at it, Jung states, that because of
complementarity, the unconscious cannot be understood, for it would always
be altered through the observation.
There are some other differences between complementarity and the term used
in psychology which is synchronicity, for it essentially involves the
manifestation of meaning in the sense of an unconscious compensation that
serves an individual's process of individuation toward wholeness. Nonlocal
correlations between quanta, in contrast, are connections between two
physical events, and do not involve a manifestation of inner psychological
meaning.

Nonetheless the differences among these theories -healthy differences by the
way- it is an other aspect that manifests the way quantum physics is not
just a hard science theory, but a breakthrough in the way the whole world is
perceived, a step ahead for civilization in its quest to understand itself
and its surrounding environment.

Buby. The History in Pictures

At the end of 1999, the first Buby catalog was published in Argentina. Buby, The History in Photos, is a fantastic masterpiece written by Lucien C. L. Brousse who unfortunately passed away last year. His book collects all the available information on all Buby collections -except for the Collectors Classics. The main focus on the book is set on a wide range of photographs that illustrate all Buby models, their characteristics and variations suffered by the models throughout Buby's production from 1957 to 1995. This is the only available catalog on Buby's diecast. It features 286 pages filled with very interesting black and white pictures. A fantastic input of the catalog is the Preface written by the owner and creator of the Buby diecasts, Mr. Haroldo "Buby" Mahler.

This great catalog is divided into four sections or parts, each of which with tons of information and exclusive data.
The first part features the Buby collection, meaning the 1:40, 1:43 scale diecasts. A general introduction leads us into a brief history of these models' production, their main characteristics and styles. Following there are two sections specially dedicated to detail all variations in wheels and boxes throughout time. Finishing this first part, all models of this collection are described and detailed photos as reference to those descriptions complete a thorough presentation of the 1:40-1:43 Buby collection.
The second part is dedicated to special vehicles and other toys made by Buby. Here the careful reader would be able to discover a wider picture of Buby's productions, his great care for details and high quality products. Also, here there's a preview of Buby's concern for diecasts collectors, for he developed several models that weren't exactly toys, but more over top quality collectibles.
The third part is fully dedicated to carefully describe the Mini Buby Collection, its history featuring product's variations within details such as wheels and boxes. There are descriptions to all Mini Buby series, their features and characteristics. Plus a section about special packaging cases and blisters.
Last but not least, the fourth part is a great input for all Buby collectors, for in this section there's a detailed list of all documents, catalogs and books that Mr. Lucien Brousse had found on this matter. At the end of this section we find a carefully organized reference number list for all Buby products throughout history.

Without a doubt, this is a masterpiece and a must for all worldwide collectors. It's a careful and precise work that has reunited a great deal of crucial information very valuable for all collectors.

Way back in June of this year,( 2004 ), I was contacted by the production crew of Culutra Cero. They wanted to interview me because they had found my Buenos Aires Toy museum on the web and they were very interested in learning a bit about what I was
doing, the research work me and my staff were carrying on about the history of toy industries in Argentina and all the daily cultural work we develop
within out site.

Cultura Cero is a TV program that airs daily at channel 7 and it reaches every single television in Argentina, for Channel 7 is a national broadcast
signal partially run by the government's Secretary of Culture. This show began to air early this year, and it has been quite a success so far.

Cultura Cero portraits an innovative and young approach to culture, setting
aside the traditional seriousness with which this kind of matters are treated, Facundo Carman (28) -the show's host and presenter- leads us into a
new cultural perspective, portraying not only cultural products to consume -movies, theatre plays, books, etc.- but also their creators, the
artists within the creative process, what they think, how they perform or produce those products and what they aim to do with their productions. He
and his young team go through Buenos Aires looking for new and innovative cultural products and producers and offer them a great place to talk about
that.

I found the project very amusing, that's why I agreed to the interview. Federico and his cameraman came to my office, they are very nice and
intelligent guys. We had a fantastic conversation and the taping went fantastic. They were very interested in the Museum and the project. we
talked and taped the interview. Once the cameras were off, we kept on talking and discussing cultural approaches in today's world of conflict and
crisis. It was a fantastic chat.

A few weeks later, they aired my interview! It was great. I got fantastic feedback from viewers from all over the country with great comments and
fantastic inputs of tips and data to be included in our research projects. IT was a great experience. I hope we can do it again soon and keep on sharing this great piece of culture we're trying to rescue form oblivion.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1924, Leopoldo Torres Aguero is a very
influential artist whose main pieces were wordily acknowledged specially
throughout the 1990s.
When analizing Torres Aguero's artwork, specialists agree to state that
there are three different stages within his lifetime works: Figuration,
lyric abstraction and sensible geometry.
Torres Aguero had lived for a couple of years in Paris early in his artistic
life, hence his early stage. He then had returned to Buenos Aires where he
was Profesor at the Fine Arts Academy in Buenos Aires.
From 1959 to 1961 Leopoldo Torres Aguero lived in Japan; this particular
relocation is seen by many art specialists as a crucial life- experience
which impacted in his art view and oriented him to full abstraction. This
was beautifully achieved throughout his last aesthetic stage where the
beauty of color and sensitivity of lines prevail outstandingly.
When he returns to Argentina he joins the organization commission to the
four Latin America exhibitions of painting and sculpture at the Musee d`Art
moderne, Paris. Some years latter he was to become the Argentine Curator at
the Biennal in Venice where his "Le Parc" work wins the International First
Prize.
His public work would be nonstop from then on, his opening speech to "First
International Congress for the Handicapped", Unesco, Paris was very
recongnized.
When he returns to Buenos Aires with his wife, the French sculptor Monique
Rozanes his art work would be complemented with all sort of lectures and
seminars, it's at that time with "Del Escrito" published by the Freudian
School in Buenos Aires , "La Monta?a y su dibujo", Bilingual edition:
Spanish-French, Bornat, Paris are published.
Among the many awards he received throughout his during these late years he
was awarded the Palanza Prize in Buenos Aires and " Chevalier des Arts et
Lettres" medal in France", commemorative medal awarded for his mural
painting in the Santa Fe Gallery, Buenos Aires. He also organizes and
participates the International Fair in Caen, dedicated to Argentina.

He was a prolific artist, throughout his lifetime career. His works are
exhibited in many museums in Buenos Aires and throughout the world, plus in
several imponent private collections.

His abstract art work are interesting and attractive. However what took him
to the top Art Society was his close and controversial friendship with
former Argentinean president Carlos Saul Menem. This quote fantastically
expresses their relationship and how deeply tied to his art it was:

"Celebrating my first fifty years of work makes me think about Hokusai who
said he would achieve his most accomplished drawings after turning 100 years
old, ideal timing to develop a loving friendship with the heart of shapes,
where the jasmine's alchemy generates a mix of perfume and rainbow; seven
chromatic pulses that invent life.
Light, particle wave, mass- less corpuscle; its virtuality provides it with
returning velocity, before having gone.
Hence I return to La Rioja, searching my first colors, once again taking my
chances with Hope, faithfully hoping to recover an Argentina for us all.
I toast for this transcendental present."

Torres Aguero, October, 1989 -This toast was made in La Rioja Carlos Saul
Menem home town, at the time when he had won the presidential elections.
His friendship with former president Menem and his prolific artwork awarded
him a cherished public position for all artists: Argentina's Ambassador to
the UNESCO in Paris.
On December 31st 1995, Leopoldo Torres Aguero passes away in Paris.

Research on Geza Horvath, so far we have been able to find this about the Hungarian artist, as soon as we can we will be confirming information and placing up photos in our Photo Gallery on line:  Full name “Andor Horvath Geza.  Born in Budapest, 1876 or 1879. He studied painting at the Vienna Academy and also as a student of Karoly Lotz. He painted mostly portraits and genre paintings.
